UNTIL NOW!!
...Well, sort of.
I figured I'd at least make a start, rambling about the versions more than anything XD
Take yer pick
Firstly, that is not the actual box art for the Trilogy, but it popped up on Google and it's delicious. So it stays.
Now, I've technically started the game twice in the space of a few hours. I did lazy thing at first - My Wii is sat set up on my little gaming counter in my room, albeit not plugged in and gather dust from the Xbox's fan. So I just grabbed the Trilogy box, dusted off and booted up the Wii and started playing. I was all for it right up until I got movement of Samus, then something ticked in the back of my head...
I'm really looking forward to Phendrana Drifts. But not because of her.
See, the Wii controls just feel ...weird. The addition of free aim, although unavoidable with Wiimote only gameplay, just throws everything off. Having played the Gamecube version to the point of turning the mini disk to dust, I've gotten used to the static aiming that everyone complained about when the game was first released.
At first I was like 'Screw it, just enjoy the game', up until I started making easy misses on near-dead Space Pirates within the first few rooms. Using the game's Lock On function didn't help any. And when you spent years making a habit of using the Lock On for perfect kills, you get a little frustrated when it doesn't work!
At that point I checked the back of the case, in the hope that, at least for the first two games on the disk, there'd be Gamecube controller support.
Nope.
So bugger it. I pushed on to the first save room, right before the Parasite Queen boss, saved and quit, and rooted out my Gamecube.
This game is the sole reason I have such an affinity
for enormous boss battles
Now I want to go on record as saying that the Gamecube is easily the most underrated console ever made, my personal favourite console ever made, and even the best console of that generation. I. fucking. love my Gamecube. The pad that came with it has a loose analogue stick, and the Wavebird looks a shade of off-brown from years of use, the 'Cube itself has lost most of its colour... It's very well used. But I'll be damned if I pack that thing up again. The Wii was, unfortunately, a bit of a waste of time and I think Nintendo needs to rethink the way they're going with it.
Personal opinions aside, I dug out my copy of 'Prime and tried again. And, after finding the right memory card (That eerie main menu 'music' has stayed with me all these years...), the game felt much much better. Felt like coming home again after years of being away.
So I'll be playing Prime through on the Gamecube. Cuz the Wii controls make me feel crap at a game that, had it had competitive multiplayer, I would have been amazing at :P
Now to crack on!
Best. Console. Ever.
